Earlier on in the week, one of my all favorite Progressive Rock bands Muse premiered their new single “Uprising” to the world, exclusively on the Zane Lowe Program on BBC Radio. It was a long and at times difficult wait, but now that I’ve had an entire week to listen to the song…I must say that the new single was definitely worth the time it took and that five albums later, Muse are still at the top of their game.
What first stuck out to me upon hearing this record (and will likely be the first thing for others as well), was the eerie synthesizer riff that starts within the first few seconds, and afterward features several times throughout the duration of the song. Sounding like what I can best describe as Dr. Who with an industrial spin (a comparison that seems to be all over the internet) this song is a far cry from the earlier Queen-inspired “United States Of Eurasia” and sounds a bit more like what fans have come to expect from the band given their earlier bodies of work. It is an impressive first single to promote the album, and instrumentally the band is still as energetic as ever, showing no signs of slowing down after almost 15 years in the game. Lyrically however, the song falls slightly short, and while the lyrocs do serve their intended purpose (the song at its core is an anthem for rebellion against power and corruption), they are not the best Bellamy has ever written and could’ve used some work before the song was mixed and mastered.
Still a good song overall; and with all things considered, I give it final score of: 8.5/10
